PALLIATIVE CARE Kim Dolman

I have been working as a nurse in
healthcare since 1986 and have been
employed in a variety of settings
including a surgical ward,  elderly care,
and for the last ten years in palliative
care, which I have to say is my true
passion and from which I get great joy.

Over the years, I became interested in
complementary interventions that
could work alongside conventional
medicine giving people the optimum
experience of healthcare, whilst
improving my practice. I started to work
at my local hospice (Myton Hospice) in
1999 as a staff nurse, and it was here
that I was able to use both my medical
and complementary therapy
knowledge and skills side by side in my
nursing role, in order to support
patients with life limiting illness and
their families, having qualified in
Aromatherapy, and also Reiki, the ‘M’
technique and NFSH Spiritual Healing
at a later date.

In 2005, my role as a nurse developed
and I am currently the Complementary
Therapist Co-ordinator at Myton
Hospice.
I have set up a complementary therapy
service at the Hospice that works
alongside the other services we offer
as an organisation. I work with a great
team of dedicated and skilled
volunteers who provide Aromatherapy,
Reflexology, Energy
Healing/Balancing, Massage,
Relaxation tools and techniques,
Indian Head Massage and the ‘M’
technique, to patients, carers and staff
across the organisation. I also facilitate
a monthly complementary therapy
interest group (open to all) for people
who wish to find out more about them.
My role includes not only providing
hands on therapy to patient’s, carers
and staff, but also to share my skills
and knowledge through teaching and
lecturing, both inside and outside the
organisation to the general public and
to a variety of professionals, including
local support groups (for both cancer
and non-cancer) and pre and post
graduate nurses and doctors for
example. My role also includes
promoting the safe use of
complementary therapy interventions
and their integration in palliative and
supportive care as well as developing
our service provision.

M.A.R. - I.F.P.A - I.T.E.C. - M.B.AcC.
- M.R.C.H.M.) Traditional Chinese
Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine
Dip. Ac. Beijing Aromatherapy,
Reflexology and Remedial Massage,
Iridology.  Kim’s early career started
as a professional ballet dancer,
performing with many international
artists such as Margot Fonteyn and
Nureyev. An early interest and study
in assisting dancers to maintain all
round health, i.e. posture, freedom
from injury, good diet and optimum
energy, led her to seek and use this
knowledge and later incorporate it
into her own practice of
complementary medicine.   Although
she is a full-time therapist Kim still
performs as a member of the Royal
Ballet Corps. Regular classes are
too short to give dancers individual
information about posture and injury
correction - Kim is in the unique
position of being able to observe the
dancer in class and providing
treatment and advice based on this.
Over the last 25 years in her own
practice she has studied and treated
patients using aromatherapy,
reflexology and Traditional Chinese
Medicine.  Kim's training began with
Remedial Massage followed by
Aromatherapy and intense training in
Reflexology. By the mid-Eighties a
childhood interest in Chinese
Philosophy led her to study
Acupuncture, and she holds
certificates in all these disciplines.
Following her first study trip to China
in 1989, in Chinese Herbal Medicine,
subsequently Kim studied in both
Beijing and Nanjing , in 1990, 1992
and again in 1999 in Shanghai . In
the year 2000, she studied again in
Beijing , taking a World Health
Organization examination in Chinese
Medicine, which she passed and
holds a certificate recognised by the
W.H.O and for which she attained
Chinese recognition.   Herbal
remedies are a useful nutritional aid
and Kim uses the Chinese herbs to
help patients with gynaecological or
menopausal complaints with
considerable success. Kim's
experience of acupuncture has led to
the development of Cosmetic
Acupuncture, which tones the facial
muscles, helping to improve and firm
the face.   Kim's interest along with
treating is early diagnosis, as
practised in China through regular
check-ups, which aims to prevent
any later manifestations of illness.
