My aim in my teachings is to give students hands on practical
principle knowledge which is easily implemented on a ward,
with simple yet effective techniques. On most of the 20
essential oils there is a fair to good amount of research. Of
course in every pathology lesson we look in a holistic way
towards caring and healing. Evaluation forms from my students
confirm their need to comply with their practical character and
desire to have simple, but effective small interventions,
supported by as much research and experience from the field
of nursing as possible. This also gives them the tools to speak
to doctors and managers

Training makes all the
difference

The use of aromatherapy within a health care setting has grown
rapidly in recent years, and will continue to do so. Recently in the
USA over 2000 nurses and midwives trained in practical
aromatherapy procedures for improving patient care and well
being in 42 hospitals in a program run by
Jane Buckle.

The need for suitable training has become apparent. No health
service can afford the risk of having staff who are inadequately
trained in the practice of aromatherapy using essential oils
incorrectly on those in a state of ill-health, especially if the
essential oils used are not to a standard suitable for therapeutic
use.

Training to an acceptable level in aromatherapy is quickly
obtained and is essential for safety and effectiveness.
Knowledge of the nature and make-up of essential oils, their
effect on the body and the emotions, and how, when, and where
to apply them is imperative in order for them to be beneficial to a
patient's health.

Contraindications to certain oils, patients, or treatment have also
to be thoroughly understood.

"The advantages of aromatherapy
are self evident; it is simple and
effective in use and can be delivered
at low cost.  it may be used in
conjunction with most other
complimentary therapies and equally
can be used to complement and
supplement allopathic medicine,
often with remakable results (when
Aromatherapy is used in hospitals
the oils may be the only non
synthetic materials in the building).
With aromatherapy, which respects
the individual person, the appraoch
is holistic so it can be used not only
for healing but also as a preventative
measure, strengthening the immune
system, promoting relaxation and
reducing stress."
FORWARD BY MEHMET OZ

Her message is one of holism and she
inspires those in healthcare to
evaluate how they use simple things
like smell and touch to help people
heal.

Under her guidance hundreds of
students have carried out pilot studies
in American hospitals.  She has written
templates for aromatherapy policies
and protocols that are being used by
hospitals.

Essential oils offer extraordinary
potential from a purely medicinal
standpoint, and recent studies on
MRSA and human subjects have
shown how powerful they can be.
