Training makes all the difference
The use of aromatherapy within a health care setting has grown rapidly in recent years, and will continue to do so. The need for suitable training has become apparent. No health service can afford the risk of having staff who are inadequately trained in the practice of aromatherapy using essential oils incorrectly on those in a state of ill-health, especially if the essential oils used are not to a standard suitable for therapeutic use. Aromatherapy for health professionals with Madelaine Knapp Hayes
Training to an acceptable level in aromatherapy is quickly obtained and is essential for safety and effectiveness. Knowledge of the nature and make-up of essential oils, their effect on the body and the emotions, and how, when, and where to apply them is imperative in order for them to be beneficial to a patient's health. Contraindications to certain oils, patients, or treatment have also to be thoroughly understood..

My aim in my teachings is to give students hands on practical principle knowledge which is easily implemented on a ward, with simple yet effective techniques. On most of the 20 essential oils there is a fair to good amount of research. Of course in every pathology lesson we look in a holistic way towards caring and healing. Evaluation forms from my students confirm their need to comply with their practical character and desire to have simple, but effective small interventions, supported by as much research and experience from the field of nursing as possible. This also gives them the tools to speak to doctors and managers
